2012 the year of the apocalypse

So 2011 has some and gone and left us with tsunami’s, a royal wedding, death of Steve Jobs and many more memorable events. Is been a good year for some and of course not so good for others. As the world goes into 2012, hoping the prophecies of the apocalypse are not true, all I can say is that I hope we all learnt from the mistakes we made in the past and become better people for the future.

No new years resolutions for me this time except that life is what you make it. Happy New year world and for what it’s worth – be good.

Steve Jobs on MacBook Pro – Thanks for great design.

Steve Jobs has been a great inspiration to all when it comes to design and creativity. I decided to put the dude on my laptop as a reminder of how he always strived for the best and never stopped looking for ways to improve design and not to mention the one thing he always said “Love what you are doing.”

Romantics, not so romantic

Packet of Romantics

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have a hellava sweet tooth. I just love sweets, cakes, chocolates, biscuits…you get the picture. Romantics is just one of those sweets you pop into your mouth and enjoy the sweet taste… until now. I was in Jo’burg (Johannesburg for our international visitors) a few weeks ago at a sweet warehouse and got a packet of Romantics – amongst other luxuries. This evening I wishing for something sweet so I opened the packet and popped one in. Damn!!! this aint no Romantic. I bit on it and it just crumbled like a compressed block of sugar. It was as sweet as hell. I even convinced my wife to taste one. I tried another… just as bad. No way was I going to give my kid those. Then it dawned on me of the rubbish they make for the kids today. No wonder they are sitting with allergies, coughing and hyper active.

Before I threw them in the bin I decided to dissolve a few in a small cup of water just for fun. I was horrified to see what was floating on top that couldn’t even dissolve.

Take a look at the pics to see what I mean. This is the crap that we are giving our kids and then when they are up all night coughing, we want to pump them with medicines. We need to rethink what we are feeding our kids and if this is just one type of sweet that is full of junk, imagine how many other sweets are damaging our kids.

What do you think?

Romantic scum floating on water

If you remember this – YOU ARE OLD !!!

The Test Pattern - Best thing on TV back in the day.

In 1975, after years of controversy over the introduction of television, the SABC was finally allowed to introduce a colour TV service, which began experimental broadcasts in the main cities on 5 May 1975, before the service went nationwide on 6 January 1976 (AFTER I was born – damn). Initially, the TV service was funded entirely through a licence fee, as in the UK, but advertising began in 1978. The SABC (both Television and Radio) is still partly funded by the licence fee (currently R225 per annum which no-one pays).

The service initially broadcast only in English and Afrikaans, with an emphasis on religious programming on Sundays.
A local soap opera, The Villagers, set on a gold mine, was well received while other local productions like The Dingleys were panned as amateurish. Owing to South Africa’s apartheid policies, the British actors’ union Equity started a boycott of programme sales to South Africa, meaning that the majority of acquired programming in the early years of the corporation came from the United States. However, the Thames Television police drama series The Sweeney was briefly shown on SABC TV, dubbed in Afrikaans as Blitspatrollie (lol). Later on, when other programmes were dubbed, the original soundtrack was simulcast on FM radio. With a limited budget, early programming aimed at children tended to be quite innovative, and programmes such as the Afrikaans-language puppetshows Haas Das se Nuus Kas and Oscar in Asblikfontein are still fondly remembered by many.

In 1982, a second channel was introduced, broadcasting in African languages. The main channel, then called TV1, was divided evenly between English and Afrikaans, as before. Subtitling on TV in South Africa used to be almost non-existent, although now many non-English language soap operas have started to display English subtitles. The second channel, known either as TV2, TV3 or TV4 depending on the time of day, was later rebranded as CCV (Contemporary Community Values). A third channel was introduced known as TSS, or Topsport Surplus, Topsport being the brand name for the SABC’s sport coverage, but this was renamed NNTV (National Network TV).

SABC television become widely available in neighbouring Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. The SABC also helped the South West African Broadcasting Corporation in Namibia to establish a television service in 1981 with most programming being videotapes flown in from South Africa. This became part of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation in 1990.

Winter time again.

I don’t know about you but I kinda hate winter time. Always trying to keep warm, rubbing your hands together, the cold water is too cold to drink while the hot water takes forever to get hot. Not to mention the 5 sets of clothing you have to wear to battle the cold working environment. I love my electric blanket though.

Anyway I shouldn’t be complaining as there are those who live on the streets, unprotected from the winter bites. They sleep in parks, alley ways, pavements and on benches with no more than a tattered jersey to keep them warm.

Oh how we complain.

Rain rain go away

It’s raining so damn hard this evening that I can’t even go outside to park the car. Agh I shouldn’t complain after what happened to the people of Japan. My heart and thoughts go out to them, also that it’s winter there and snowing – the poor babies with no homes must be freezing under those shelters.

They say the plates only moved a few meters and yet it caused so much destruction. Can we not see the power of the All Might? I fear what is going to happen on the day of resurrection.

Hows the weather where you are?

My new internet cafe - coming soon

Hi guys. I’ve FINALLY taken the plunge and rented a shop. A friend of mine was kind enough to give me the front section which is quite big, so i’ve decided to open an Apple based Internet Cafe. I’ll obviously have Apple computers available to surf the net in addition to iPods, iPhones and Apple hardware sales. I will do all my graphic design from the shop as well. For those of you in Newcastle, its at the Fruit and Veg building. I’ll definitely update you guys as things progress.

I havent thought of an official name just yet but i’m leaning towards iCafe. What do you think? More
